News for 2013!!!

Hello cyclists,

I hope you're all doing well and able to get out there and ride in between the rain we've been getting. As we end 2012, I wanted to wish you and your family Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, and a Happy New Year.

As we come to the end of 2012 and look forward to 2013, I've been evaluating my goals and re-setting my new goals for 2013. One thing I'd like to try and do is create a jersey or t-shirt for Team CycleFit, so that we can have some identity when we're together. I know we're not a "hard-core" cycling club, but I think a sense of identity is nice, especially if we ever do any bicycle events in 2013.

Speaking of which, I've recently registered for my first century, the Riverside Citrus Classic, in October. I've always wanted to do that so will start training for that. I'd love it if anyone would like to join me in this quest, so let me know and we can schedule some training rides in here.
As for our bi-monthly rides on the 2nd and 4th Sundays, I've decided to make a change for 2013. We haven't had that many people showing up for the 8:00 AM rides on the 4th Sundays for a while now. It's also been quite cold so I'm guessing that we don't have people wanting to ride in this cold! So I've cancelled these AM rides on the 4th Sunday.

For those who want to ride in the mornings, I would encourage you to join the Team Possabilities ride on the last Sun. of every month at 8:00 AM. They have a good group of both able-bodied and hand-cyclists riding, complete with people with equipment, food, etc. I've let their leaders know even though their rides are open to anyone. For more info and to see their calendar for the latest updates, go to:

http://www.teampossabilities.org/hand-cycling/

For those wanting to ride in the afternoons : I'm keeping the 2nd Sun. afternoon rides for now (till it gets too hot) so please RSVP for those rides if you plan to join that ride.

Besides these afternoon rides, I'd like to encourage anyone in the group to feel free to set-up an event like some of you did on the Pacific Electric Trail awhile back. I've set up this group so that any member can create an event so feel free to do so.

One of my other cycling goals this year is to start up a Trip4Kids chapter here in the IE. Trip4Kids is a non-profit that helps introduce mountain biking to inner-city and disadvantage kids. It's something I've wanted to do for the last 20 years, and I want to see if 2013 will be the year we get that up and running. That's another reason I'm stepping back a bit from our scheduled rides even though I'll be riding almost 6 days a week. They do mountain bike rides, so if you're interested in riding with us and the kids, let me know!

That's the latest news for Team CycleFit as we close out 2012. I hope to continue to see you guys out there on upcoming rides, and now that we have just one regularly monthy scheduled ride, we can have a greater variety of rides at different locations at random times. (Still want to do a ride to the beach on the bike path, especially since I have to do some longer rides as part of my century training.)

Looking forward to all the various ride events that YOU can come up with and invite us to in 2013!

Riding to your health and fitness!

Nice 12-mile ride!

12-12-12: Our 12-mile ride on the SART went very well! We left right at 12:12 PM after our group picture and rode out 6 miles and back...though some of the faster kids went past the 6-mile turn-around-point and went a couple of extra miles before realizing their mistake. Overall, had a great ride, the rain clouds held off, and then some of us enjoyed lunch at Souplantation after.

Thx to all those who joined us on this ride! We had more than 12 so we did have at least 12 people on this ride.

12 on 12-12-12

You're invited to join us on a special ride: 12 miles on 12-12-12 at 12:12 PM! We will ride on our usual bike path, the SART (behind Souplantation/City Hall of Records--see side bar for directions) and then enjoy lunch at Souplantation afterwards.

Looking for at least 11 other people to join me on this ride (more is fine!) so if you're off that day or can take a long lunch, then join us!

You can RSVP on MeetUp.com (Team CycleFit group) or on Facebook (search "12 on 12-12-12-") and RSVP there.

Hope to see you out there in a few weeks!

Nice ride this AM!

10-14-12: Had a nice ride this AM with Shawndra and new rider, Nolan. He found us on Cyclery USA"s website. The weather, temp, and breeze were just right. Couldn't ask for better cycling weather! Lots of people on the SART thia AM. Look forward to having Nolan with us again!

As I stated earlier, won't be here Oct. 28 for our 4th Sun ride, so join up with Team Possabilitie's group ride. (see their schedule) on that AM. Look for Pedro or Robert.

First Nov. ride is on Nov. 11, 3:00 PM! Our first afternoon ride. I just realized I'll be doing the Mission Inn 10K that AM so guess it'll be a big exercise day that day!!! ;-)

Hope to see you out on the bike path or trail! If you haven't ridden with us lately, come on out, the weather is great. And kids are always welcome!!!

Oct. rides; Afternoons back in Nov!

10-9-12: Ah, it looks like the summer heat is finally over! We're getting some cool days now, and that's great for riding. For this month (Oct.), we'll keep it to the usual 8:00 AM rides on Oct. 14 (2nd) and Oct. 28 (4th) Sundays, but starting in Nov., we'll add back in an afternoon ride!

Starting Nov. 11 (2nd Sun.), we'll start a ride at 3:00 PM and continue the afternoon rides on the 2nd Sunday of each month through May 2013. After that, we'll see how the temps are and switch back to the AM time. So here's what it'll look like for the coming months:

2nd Sundays of the month
Nov. 11: 3:00 PM
Dec. 9: 3:00 PM
Jan. 13: 2:00 PM
Feb. 10: 1:00 PM??? (depends on how early sunset is)
Mar. 10: 1:00 PM
April 14: 1:00 PM
May 12: 1:00 PM

4th Sundays of the month: 8:00 AM.

Team PossAbilities also rides in the AM on the LAST Sun. of each month, so we may join up with them when there is no 5th Sun in the month.

As always, on the other Sundays, you're more than welcome to join me mtn biking on the dirt roads up at Hulda Crooks Park. Text me to find out for specific times the night before or that AM.

Still would be interested in trying to do some rides at other places, just have to re-schedule a time and do it so stay tuned!!!

Hope to see you on the bike path...

Highschool Mtn Bike Team Organizational Meeting

8-23-12: Hi all, I rec'd this from the coaches of the local highschool mtn bike team. This is open to high schoolers (boys and girls) from any of the local highschools and academies, as well as homeschoolers. If your child would be interested in joining a mtn bike team for kids, don't miss this informational meeting this coming Mon. PM.

BTW, this team did very well in their first season, garnering some top honors by our local kids! You can read about it in the current issue of the Pacific Union Recorder (SDA church's magazine for the Pacific Union). Congrats to some of our Redlands Adventist Academy kids!

Ernie

*************************************************

Hello All,
It's time to start planning for the upcoming season. We will be holding an information meeting on Monday, August 27th at Cyclery USA in Redlands at 7pm. Please spread the word so we can help grow the team. Everyone is welcome. We will be going with a new clothing vendor this year so please be at the meeting to try on clothing samples from the new vendor. There are also a lot of new changes to the RICO program this year so attending this meeting is important.

Spread the word!

Best regards,

Aug. 26 beach ride POSTPONED...

8-13-12: Hi TCF riders,

Sorry I have to do this, but I have to postpone the beach ride for Aug. 26. I just learned this AM that I have to be out of town for a meeting that weekend, so won't be back till Sun. evening, which means I won't be here to lead out in any ride.

Also, the heat has still be brutal, so it might be too hot to ride at 10 AM, even that close to the beach, but mainly because I'm going to be out of town.

However, if anyone wants to "lead out" and be the point person for Team Cyclefit and still do this ride, I'd be happy to keep it scheduled and put out the info on GoogleMaps as to where to meet and ride from. So let me know if you're interested in leading out.

If I don't hear from anyone, consider this ride postponed and I'll look ahead at a date when we can re-schedule it and let everyone know ASAP.

Sorry for the inconvenience this schedule change may have caused! We'll do that beach ride eventually!!!

This Sunday time change to 7:00 AM

8-9-12: Due to the brutal heat, this Sunday's bike ride on the SART bike path has been moved an hour earlier to 7:00 AM. If you can't make it earlier, that's ok, just come out when you can and make sure you have my cell phone in case you need me for anything. I'll be somewhere on the bike path heading to Mt. Rubidoux so if I miss you at 7:00 AMish, you can call me if you need me. Will probably see you coming back!

Also, stay tune for more details on our upcoming BEACH RIDE on Aug. 26! Save the date! It'll start around  10:00 AM from various locations along the SART heading to Huntington Beach so you can pick and choose what mileage you want to ride. (Longest one-way starting point will be 13 miles; shortest will be about 7 miles).

RSVPs would be appreciated so I have an idea of who to expect. Already have a number of families and kids who are planning on riding with us.

Stay cool and ride!

Tuesday, July 17, 2012

Congrats to Rowley and Magakat kids!

7-17-12: It was a nice cool AM for a mtn bike ride this AM. The Rowley family showed up early, just after 7:00 AM, while I and the Magakat kids showed up around 7:20 AM. The Rowley's rode here a couple of times after their first ride last Tuesday AM, and each time they kept going further than the last time. (Hats off to the Rowleys, for I saw them in my Total Wellness class in the AM AND my evening class the night before!)

Well today, they decided to push all the way to the top of the 1st Hump (aka Scott's Ridge) and the attached picture shows them at the top! Judging on the smiles on their face and how fast they flew down the downhill, I could tell they were enjoying the reward. Way to go Rebecca and Benson, and their mom, Nancy. They really picked up the downhill lessons fast! (Rachel and Dad Kurt had to turn around early for work...they'll have to do it next time!)

Team Magakat has a few more rides under their belt (especially Jordan), and they also did well going up and down, especially the youngest, JorelHe just flew down the hills with abandon!! I think it's Julianne's and Jorel's first time to the top of the 1st Hump on a mtn. bike as well (they've hiked that before many times) so congrats to them as well!! Thx for coming out and keep the Rowley kids company. ;-)

We welcome beginners--both adults and kids--to ride with us on Tues. AMs. And if you're very nervous about riding your own mtn bike, but want to give it a try, let me know and I can bring my mtn. bike TANDEM out and you can ride with me on that. It's a very stable smooth ride because of the long wheelbase. Just let me know ahead of time so I can bring it out.

And don't forget to Team CycleFit for a paved ride on the bike path this Sun., 8:00 AM, behind Souplantation/Hall of Records. Kids and families welcome!

Beg. Mtn. Bike rides; Sun. news

7-16-12: Hi all, This AM's ride was cooler--and Roxy ran a LOT faster this AM--so I hope it's that way this week compared to last week! ;-)

Tues. 7:30 AM mtn bike ride
We're having our 2nd mtn bike ride up in Hulda Crooks Park tomorrow AM. We may have more riders...was talking to a new patient this AM and she just bought a new bike and is eager to try it out on both dirt and road. So if you're a BEGINNER mtn biker, then this is the ride for you!!! If you are looking to ride the Jedi and go all the way to Razor's Edge or up the Mother, then this is NOT the ride for you (even though you're welcome to join us). We take a LOT of breaks, based on the needs of the group, and we don't go very far since they are first starting out, so if this is you, come and join us! (I also do this on the 1st and 3rd Suns when we are not riding on the SART Bike Path.

THIS Sunda...SART!
Speaking of which, we're out at SART this Sun. I've missed the last couple since before we left for Nicaragua so plan to be there this Sun and head to Mt. Rubi again. So I hope to see some of you there!

I know there will be a small group from ESRI that will be joining us most likely, so will keep an eye out for these first-timers to join us.

August Sun. rides
Looking ahead, I think it's time to do a bike path ride down to the beach, don't you? The one I've done in the past starts at Anaheim Stadium and goes down to Huntington beach. It's about 12 miles 1-way, so I may find a spot that is a bit closer for those who don't want to do a 24-mile round trip ride. (Anyone have any good suggestions as to where to start closer? I heard there was a Costco that was closer and next to the bike path. Let me know!).

If you're interested in going, let me know which Sun. would work best for you:
A. Aug. 12
B. Aug. 26
C. Either Sunday

Send your vote via e-mail and let me know! Then from those who express an interest, we'll finalize a time that the majority what to start at.

C-ya Tues and/or Sunday!

July is here!

7-9-12: July's heat is finally here with a vengeance! I missed yesterday's ride due to my daughter's b-day but heard some were there. For those who rode, I hope you had a great ride! Here are some updates for July....

Change to 7:30 AM ride time
Because of the heat, we may want to move it even earlier for the rides, at least for the time being. For July 22, let's shoot for 7:30 AM departure in order to beat the heat. If some want to leave earlier, that's your choice but I'll shoot to leave by 7:30 AM that date. Possabilities also rides at 7:30 AM so you'll see them there as well.

TCF on MeetUp.com
Also, many of you have joined Team CycleFit on Meetup.com. If you haven't already, I encourage you to join us there because that is more up-to-date and you can interact more easily with other riders. It's free, so join us there today! Just sign up on Meetup.com and then search for Team CycleFit and join our group!

Kid's Mountain Bike club
For those with kids who want to try mountain bike during the week, I'm testing out a kid's BEGINNER ride on Tuesday, 7:30 AM, at Hulda Crook Park by the dog park. If interested, show up around 7:15 or 7:20 and we'll try to leave for the ride at 7:40 AM at the latest to beat the heat. Since I have some beginner kids, we won't go very far and take it easy, so if you want to join us, look for us then! Starting that TOMORROW, July 10, 7:30 AM.

Be cool and ride safe!

June 2012 updates

6-4-2012: Greetings! Hope you were able to bicycle a lot last month during National Bike Month. I was able to bicycle every day in May (including about 4 days where I had to use a stationary bike since I was away at 2 conferences last month!).

For June, the schedule is the same as listed on May 20. I'm riding June 10, but will be out of the country for the June 17 and 24 rides so will be back in July. Others will be riding so be sure to join in if you're around and able to get up for an 8:00 AM ride!

Keep cool this summer!

Summer schedule

5-20-12: Now that it's HOT, we are switching to our "Summer Schedule". Check out below for our various times and rides:

2nd & 4th Sundays: 8:00 AM, SART bike path (behind Souplantation). We may announce some different location rides, so stay tuned!

1st & 3rd Sundays: 8:00 AM, mountain bike ride, Hulda Crooks Park in Loma Linda (unless otherwise announced). Highly recommend to e-mail or text Ernie to RSVP as the times can change last-minute.

Various Saturday afternoons & 1st & 3rd Sundays: we will announce various beach rides or mountain bike rides up in the mountains, so stay tuned!

Thankfully, we have other ride "hosts" so we can provide other options besides what I (Ernie) can do, so thanks to those TCF riders who have volunteered to be ride hosts/leaders.

Have a cool and safe summer and look forward to seeing you on a ride!

This Sun ride @ 5:00 PM, NOT 1:30 PM!!!

4-20-12: Hi TCF riders,

Due to the high temperatures this coming weekend, we are moving the 1:30 PM scheduled ride to 5:00 PM instead, same location (behind Souplantation). Sorry for the late notice, so hope it doesn't inconvenience anyone. I thought about moving it to the AM but don't want to conflict with the Run through Redlands that AM.

Raymond has to work Sunday, and I have an appointment at 6:00 PM in Riverside, so unfortunately, we won't be there. Jeanne, a charter member of TCF from over 10 years ago (and afternoon only rider), said she and a friend will be there, so there will be at least 2 people going, so look for them if you go!

(BTW, I will most likely ride my mtn bike in the early AM, around 8 or 8:30 AM, with Roxy before it gets hot, so if anyone wants to join me on that, text/call me on my cell (909-747-5935).

Have a great weekend all! I hear rain is coming next week...wow!

Post-Easter ride

4-9-12 Great ride yesterday! Even though we had a pretty good headwind going out, it stayed so we had a nice tailwind going back, so that was nice. Quite a few kids rode yesterday, and we should be seeing more because most of them aren't in any team sports this spring--yeah! Love seeing kids and families riding together. Even my own daughter, Summer, came along for the ride! Check out some of the pixs on our Facebook album. Here's our group shot at the start.

CU at our next ride on the April 22 If it's too hot, we may change the time later, so stay tuned! And as always, on the other Sunday AMs, I ride on the dirt, so if you want to join me, send me a text or e-mail!

Sunday, April 1, 2012

Easter Sunday Ride - 4:00 PM

4-1-12: Departing from our usual 2nd Sun. AM schedule, enjoy an Easter celebration in the AM and then come out to our usual place behind Souplantation/Hall of Records to ride on the bike path at 4:00 PM. Then let's eat at Souplantation afterwards!

Hope to see you there....

1:30 ride this Sunday!

3-21-12: The big Redland's Classic will be happening this weekend, but if you aren't racing or riding with that, join us for this Sunday's ride at 1:30 PM at the bike path behind Souplantation! It's our usual ride location and a great place to ride with the kids. Hope to see you then!

Sunday, March 11, 2012

3-11-12: Great ride today! Perfect weather, awesome group of almost 20 riders out there on the bike path. Met some new people from our TCF MeetUp group, and check out these two breaking in their brand new bikes!

Sarah with her new Trek 29er mtn. bike from Cyclery USA and Lori with her new Giant roadbike from Don's Bikes.

Check out pixs in this FB album! Hope you can join us for our next ride on the 4th Sun., March 25.

Feb. 12 ride

2-5-12: Our first Sun. ride in Feb. will be our usual ride on the bike path behind Souplantation/Hall of Records. Ride will start at 9:00 AM so show up a bit earlier to get ready.

I'm double-booked that AM so Raymond (a rider from my MeetUp TCF group) has graciously offered to be the "ride host" in my place. I first met him on our January ride when it was super-windy so I know you're in good hands!

Have a great ride and CU on the 4th Sunday ride, location TBA. ;-)

Gorgeous ride around Lake Perris!

1-22-12: The weather cooperated and cleared up beautifully for our ride around Lake Perris this afternoon. Just check out the pictures in my FB album and you'll see what I'm talking about!

We'll definitely do this again! Everyone had a nice time and enjoy this scenic and tranquil ride around the lake.

Saturday, January 14, 2012

4th Sun. (Jan. 22) ride - NEW ride!

1-14-12: This is the first ride that we are doing away from our usual bike path! Venturing out to other locations this year. ;-)

For this ride, will stick fairly close to home: Lake Perris State Park and Rec area, in Moreno Valley. There's a nice bike path that goes around the lake, a bit of a hike-a-bike to get to the dam, and then a nice ride along the dam and back to the parking lot.

Being a state park, don't forget your pass or pay $10/car so car pool if you can. They don't charge people to bike into the park, but there is no parking lots outside of the park and you can't park along the road.

From the map at this link (http://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=24004), will try and park at Lot 11 (closest to the Moreno entrance). If that is closed, will keep working our way down till we get to the first open parking lot.

Call me on my cell (909-747-5935) if you can't find us. ;-)

The link above also has directions if you've never been here before.

It's a nice paved bike path that goes around the lake. It says it's 9 miles long, but from what we've measured, it's more like 13 miles from parking lot to parking lot.

Prep time: 12:30 - 1:30 PM

Heading off on the ride: 1:30 PM

Approximate finish time: 2:47 PM (short hike-a-bike section to get to dam)

Looking forward to seeing you there! Hope it's not windy like last time. LOL!

BTW, if you're in MeetUp.org, join TCF there and then you can RSVP so I know if you're attending or not.

1st ride of 2012: WINDY 65!

1-8-12: Whew! The first ride of 2012 was THE windiest I have ever experienced. The news reported winds of up to 65 MPH!

Nevertheless, had a few brave souls who made it all the way to Mt. Rubidoux and back. Check out the pixs and hope to see you at our next ride Jan. 22, 1:30 PM!

Looking at my Endomondo data, some of the splits are telling:

Miles 1-9 (heading to Mt. Rubi) ave. between 4 & 5 min. miles, with one 7 min. mile.
Miles 10 - 15 (heading back) ave. between 8 and 11 min. miles!
Miles 16-18 (after Robin got picked up and trying to catch the other two) ave. 5 min miles.

Total Data: 18.14 miles completed in 2:02 hours. Ave. speed 6:46 min/mile, burned 2080 kcals!

Robin, Ada (red) and Raymond raise their hands in victory as we headed towards Mt. Rubidoux. They laughed at the wind. Little did we know the wind would have the last laugh on the way back!!

Yeah! We made it!!!

Mandy (left) and Sarah (right end) joined us as well.

To see the rest of the pixs, especially of the challenging ride back in the strongest head wind ever, click HERE.
